Olsztyn is one of the few Polish cities where a company picnic can be laid out literally between water and forest. Within its administrative borders lie more than a dozen lakes, and along the river Lyna stretches the vast City Forest, so we organise outdoor team building here without travelling far beyond the city limits. For teams from Warmia this is a natural asset: a family day in the open air over the surface of Lake Ukiel or Lake Kortowskie has an atmosphere that cannot be transferred to any other city.
The largest ready base for company picnics in Olsztyn is the Ukiel Recreation and Sports Centre with its City Beach on Kapitanska Street. When an event is meant to be spectacular and calls for a professional, covered stage, we reach for the Czeslaw Niemen Amphitheatre by the Warmian Chapter Castle, a venue with a real auditorium and back-of-house, the main stage of the Olsztyn Artistic Summer. For large productions with full service, commercial centres outside the city work superbly: the broad meadow of Manor Resort and SPA by the lake, the green grounds of Hotel Omega with its barbecue spot, or Marengo with bonfires and folk performances. Smaller gatherings work well in Central Park on the Lyna.
In Olsztyn the programme revolves around the water, so June, July and August give the most, when the bathing areas and rentals by Ukiel and Lake Kortowskie are open and the City Beach handles a full fleet of kayaks, SUP boards and Omega dinghies. Early autumn has its charm, the golden City Forest on the Lyna is a strong backdrop for company photos, but expect shorter days and cooler lakeside evenings, so for September dates we more often add heated marquees and an evening bonfire.
We arrange a family day in age layers. For toddlers we set aside a soft zone with an animator by the buffet, for school-age children a rope park in the City Forest with a route matched to height fits well, and for teenagers and parents, water activities on Ukiel, where a sailing instructor runs a short SUP course or mini parent-child regattas. The key is timing: lively attractions in the morning, a meal mid-day, and a finale, a show or a shared bonfire with music, so the youngest last to the end.
